How about a mid-week, morning hike around Lake Poway to collect some caches.

By my count there are about 10 in the area. Some I have placed, Some I have already found, and some I still need to find.

The hike should be about 5 miles and we should be finished easily before noon.

Come on out, collect some smilies, and get some fresh air.

We will meet at the parking lot near the concession stand at 9:00 and start out to the south at 9:15.

It seems to me that there might be some people out there that would like to learn about geocaching. I am going to try and set up some hikes in the area where I can introduce small groups to this fun outdoor activity. ( I will limit this hike to 6 )

We will be hiking in the hills, south-east of Poway near Garden Rd and Sycamore Canyon Rd. The hike is about 5 miles and you will find 10-12 caches depending on time. Please bring water and wear hiking boots. If you have a GPS, great, bring it along. If not, I have two that we can share. I will load the geocaches on my two, but if you want a list of the caches we will be looking for e-mail me and I will send you a list. You can then enter the locations on your own GPS.

It would be great if you were to already have a membership. That way you will be able to log the finds when you get home. If you don't have a membership, go to geocaching.com and click on the getting started tab. ( It's free, why not )

We'll meet in the parking lot and take as few cars as possible to the trail head. It's a public street but I don't want to fill it up.

This is for beginners with little or no experience.

First annual NCC Oktoberfest celebration! Come on out and try out a new place in San Marcos and eat, drink (beer or root beer whatever suits your fancy) and of course be very merry! Join us starting at 6 PM for nothing more than a fun meet and greet.

Here's a little history:

Oktoberfest is a sixteen-day festival held each year in Munich, Germany, running from late September to early October. It is one of the most famous events in Germany and the world's largest fair, with some six million people attending every year, and is an important part of Bavarian culture. Other cities across the world also hold Oktoberfest celebrations, modeled after the Munich event.

Visitors also eat huge amounts of traditional hearty fare such as Hendl (chicken), Schweinsbraten (roast pork), Haxn (knuckle of pork), Steckerlfisch (grilled fish on a stick), Würstel (sausages) along with Brezeln (Pretzel), Knödeln (potato or bread dumplings), Käsespätzle (cheese noodles), Reiberdatschi (potato pancakes), Sauerkraut or Rotkraut (red cabbage) along with such Bavarian delicacies as Obatzda (a fatty, spiced cheese-butter concoction) and Weisswurst (a white sausage).

Unfortunately none of the above food items will be available. This is San Marcos after all, not Munich! But there will be a suitable menu of burgers, sandwiches and finger foods available.

PLEASE SPECIFY if you prefer beef (a variety of burgers are available) or chicken (as in a sandwich) and how many will be in your party when you post your log so I can give the owner advance warning.

The outdoor patio has been reserved, and has a wood burning stove there if it's chilly, but bring a jacket just in case. We can linger inside too if needed.

It seems to me that there might be some people out there that would like to learn about geocaching. I am going to try and set up some hikes in the area where I can introduce small groups to this fun outdoor activity. ( I will limit this first hike to 6 ) Weekend meetups to come later.

The first area will be in the hills, south-east of Poway. The hike is about 5 miles and you will find 10-12 caches. Please bring water and wear hiking boots. If you have a GPS, great, bring it along. The earth spins around the axis which is an imaginary line going through the planet between the north and south poles. The axis is tilted at 23.5 degrees; because of this tilt, we enjoy the four seasons. For a few months of the year, one half of the earth receives more direct rays of the sun than the other half.

When the axis tilts towards the sun, as it does between June and September, it is summer in the northern hemisphere. June 21st is called the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere.

On June 21st there are 24 hours of daylight north of the Arctic Circle (66.5° north of the equator). The sun's rays are directly overhead along the Tropic of Cancer (the latitude line at 23.5° north, passing through Mexico, Saharan Africa, and India) on June 21.

So, on June 21 the sun rises at 5:41 a.m. and sets at 8:07 p.m. Southern California's earliest sunrise is the same as the solstice and lasts from June 4-21 but the sunset is one minute later, 8:08 p.m. from June 28-July 1st.

The longest (technically) day of the year! What better reason to have a geocaching event? A day of caching, culminated with a beach party. Bring your chairs, your puzzle hints, favorite beverage and a dish to share. This will be a pot luck beach bash party complete with fun things to do and prizes!

Again, The fun starts at 1 pm, chow line will open up at 3 pm. BTW, Sunset is at 8:07 p.m. Event ends when the fire is out.

Please see the Geocaching.com event page and also indicate you plan to attend there.

Amnesty Event

It has come to my attention that large numbers of cachers have been misspelling the common exclamation of excitement, “WoooooHoooooooo,” which frequently appears in cache logs primarily in connection with a FTF. It appears that these miscreants believe there to be an aitch after the dubya, i.e., WhoooooHoooooooo. This misperception has risen to a state of epidemic and it must be stopped. You all know who you are. And, frankly, I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!!

Consider the pronunciation of the following words, noting that there is no aitch following the dubya:

Wood
Wool
Woman
Woof

Each of the above words shares the proper pronunciation of the WooooooHooooooooo exclamation. Contrast the pronunciation of the following words, each of which employs an aitch following the dubya:

Who
Whole
Whom
Whose

In each of these cases, the dubya is silent and the aitch is pronounced. I rest my case.

So, to remedy this outrage, I have reserved the familiar Giovanni’s Italian Restaurant on April 25th at 6 pm. Amnesty will be granted to any and all who attend, provided that each bows before the altar of the Verbivore and swears to forever abstain from following the dubya with an aitch. But pity the fool who dares to employ the offending aitch from and after the date of this event. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, there will be a severe price to pay for such frivolous indiscretions!!! Sgt. Argyle will be re-deployed with a new mission and a vengeance!! No prisoners will be taken!!!

So come one, come all, and may the offenders repent and be saved from the wrath of Sgt. Argyle!!

Spring Camp Out Ocotillo Style at N 33° 07.904 W 116° 08.162

That time of the year again.

Nothing fancy here, just a Campout to go along with the CITO. Come on out to the CITO and spend the night.

There will be a nice camp fire to enjoy at night .

Sorry no porta potties, no raffle, no poker run. Just a nice day to do some Caching and then spend the night.

We will fire up the big BBQ for a picnic lunch after the CITO. The hotdogs seemed to be a hit last year so we'll do it again. So, after the CITO come on over and count this EVENT also.

I am planning a 4+ mile, 5+ cache hike to "heaven" ( My Stairway To Heaven
GC17C2K ). Start near the trailhead at Fall-Book Cache GC1JBVP. Meet at 0900. It is much more fun to hike / cache together. Bring water if you come. Dogs OK. Chime in if you are interested. Any comments or
suggestions?
