Balboa Park Cache-a-Thon

Okay, this should be an interesting event and it will be the first time I've tried something of this scale. There are a total of 28 Geocaches (downloaded from geocaching.com) that are spread out, in and around Balboa Park. That includes one that is apparently inside the Zoo. I don't have passes, but if anyone does, they're welcome to detour and find this one as well.

I've set up the route moving in a counterclockwise direction around Balboa Park. The route (as a crow flies) is 4.6 miles, however, there will be a lot of cutting back and forth, and winding trails to reach some of these caches, so I would imagine it could be close to 8 miles when finished.

This is NOT a race. This is an exploration of Balboa Park and helping newcomers find their first caches, etc. We can stick together, or we can break off into smaller groups so as to give more people a chance to find their first cache. This all depends on how many show-up.

Follow this link to download the MapSource files or all the individual .loc files to load into your GPS. There's also a larger version of the satellite image overlay.

For a detailed look, there is a Google Earth file you can download at the link above.

It is highly recommended that you pack water, possibly some lunch (or you can buy lunch at a few places around the park).

As with any geocache, there is no guarantee it still exists. I have not checked each cache so there is a risk of not finding a few. Also, be sure to bring plenty of trinkets to share in the caches you find!

Kids and I enjoyed the full circuit (and a lot more after!). Thanks to Sean for the tour, and it was a great day for it!

We enjoyed the Cache-a-Thon very much, even though we had already visited most of the caches in the park previously. You found at leat one that I couldn't find earlier. Sorry my granddaughters (and I!) couldn't last for the full circuit. We hope there are more meetups like this.

If its the second weekend of the month, Connie and I can make it. We have another committment the first weekend of the month and we try to go to Mexico the third weekend of the month. But we are up for almost anything.

Hi all, I confirmed with the organizer of the other event and it is a "flash" geocache event that has is meant to occur just prior to ours... thus possibly allowing some geocachers to join us. So, no worries again on the multiple events rumor. :-)

Hi Blakely, I was unaware of the "official" GPS event. So the answer is no it's not related and yes, there are two events going on at the same time. Should be interesting. Sean

Is this Balboa Park Cache-a-thon the same as "The Official Global GPS Cache Hunt - Flash Cache Event" (GC1FT11) that is going on at the same time and same place or are two geocaching events going on in Balboa park at the same time?

Two caches in my G4T50 series were released in Balboa Park recently: G4T50 - SIXTH Serve (GC1F541) and G4T50 - EIGHTH Jam (GC1F91A). Another is planned to be released in the park (insert drum roll) on Sept. 13. I'll see about launching it a couple of days early to get it on the list for this geogathering. Looking forward to this event!

    •  I learned a lot of things today, including many things that will make the next group caching event more organized and hopefully fun for everyone.

    •  What a fun day! Caching with others is a whole different experience. It was great to finally get to meet other geocachers. Thank you for organizing this meet-up Sean K!

I can't complain a bit. But it was long. We enjoyed the slower pace at the end when it was just a few of us.
