The earth spins around the axis which is an imaginary line going through the planet between the north and south poles. The axis is tilted at 23.5 degrees; because of this tilt, we enjoy the four seasons. For a few months of the year, one half of the earth receives more direct rays of the sun than the other half.

When the axis tilts towards the sun, as it does between June and September, it is summer in the northern hemisphere. June 21st is called the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere.

On June 21st there are 24 hours of daylight north of the Arctic Circle (66.5° north of the equator). The sun's rays are directly overhead along the Tropic of Cancer (the latitude line at 23.5° north, passing through Mexico, Saharan Africa, and India) on June 21.

So, on June 21 the sun rises at 5:41 a.m. and sets at 8:07 p.m. Southern California's earliest sunrise is the same as the solstice and lasts from June 4-21 but the sunset is one minute later, 8:08 p.m. from June 28-July 1st.

The longest (technically) day of the year! What better reason to have a geocaching event? A day of caching, culminated with a beach party. Bring your chairs, your puzzle hints, favorite beverage and a dish to share. This will be a pot luck beach bash party complete with fun things to do and prizes!

Again, The fun starts at 1 pm, chow line will open up at 3 pm. BTW, Sunset is at 8:07 p.m. Event ends when the fire is out.

Please see the Geocaching.com event page and also indicate you plan to attend there.
